Many colleges and universities advertise a holistic admissions process, but most students are unfamiliar with the term. In a time when test scores and a 4.0+  GPA is emphasized left and right, it seems like there isnt anything else that colleges look at. A holistic admissions process means that the college will look at the whole student. Students who have excellent test scores and a high GPA but have zero extracurricular activities may be at a disadvantage. However, students who are counting on those extracurriculars to help them get into college will do well to apply to at least a couple of holistic universities. So what exactly is the “whole” student? 1. Extracurricular and volunteer experience One of the things colleges want to know about a potential student is what they did outside of school. Although it can seem like the hours between 7:30 and 3:00 just never end colleges want to know what happens from 3 p.m. on. In many students` minds their GCSE grades will be the first results that really matter. They will have taken many tests before, indeed they will have been regularly graded and assessed for most of their time at school - but by the time of their GCSE`s they will be mature enough to know just how important these exams are. The transition from GCSE to 6th form means the beginning of specialisation, a reduction of the number of subjects being studied. Most students will take 9 subjects for GCSE, but after this the academic range will narrow. Three subjects are the norm for a post GCSE student - their strengths and weaknesses will have been established, and they may well have an idea as to what they would like to study at university. Even though A-levels may be seen the expected route to take after GCSE`s, there are a number of alternatives that may be more suitable. The three main options, apart from entering the workplace directly of course, are NVQs, BTECs, and traineeships. It can be about you, someone you know, a relationship or an experience. It can be good, bad, tragic or magical! Ballads are a way for you to share any experience. When picking your story, make sure that it has a distinct introduction, a plot with a problem, and a resolution to the problem. Remember you don’t have long to tell your story so make sure you can tell it in a short poem. The first line of a ballad is the most important because it introduces the reader to the story. Remember earlier when we said ballads often have an abrupt opening? T ry to do the same with yours. Reel the reader in from the very beginning. Maybe you can try beginning with a question or directly address the reader using “you” to immerse them instantly into your story. For this type of poem, you can pick your own rhyme scheme. Most commonly, though, there are four groups or stanzas, of three lines with an AAB rhyme scheme where the first two lines rhyme and the third line is different.Ballads are unique as poems because they have choruses, much like their musical equivalents. Typically, the third line of each stanza is the chorus, so make sure that this line is something that is relevant throughout the entire story because this chorus will be repeated many times in the poem. Your poem’s rhyme scheme will most likely look like AAB CCB DDB EEB, with the same line at the end of each stanza.  Since ballads tell stories while using rhyme and repetition naturally they are perfectly adapted for turning into songs.
